It has only been two weeks since I have been at the Veterans’ Home but it feels like much longer! I cannot believe how much of a routine it has become. If I remember correctly, tomorrow night at the Veterans’ Home should be live entertainment. This is one of my favorite nights because we just get to sit there and listen to the music. It is very relaxing after a stressful day at school! It is also nice to see how much the residents like the music. Last time the band came the singer sang the song “You are my sunshine”. While singing, she went around, held each resident’s hand one at a time, and got him or her to sing with her. It was really nice to watch.
Last week was probably the most stressful week I’ve had so far at Purdue. Because of a Calculus exam I was not able to volunteer at the Veterans’ Home. I really enjoy volunteering and I wish I did not have to miss last week but it is becoming very hard to juggle everything. I am starting to get stressed by the mandatory thirty hours. It really has been a hard transition from home to college mostly because I do not have a car. Instead of being able to go somewhere whenever I want I have to plan out how I am going to get to and from where I want to go. Volunteering would be so much easier if I could drive myself there! When I volunteer on Monday nights I rely on the girl I work with to take me home. I always have that worry that she will not show up one week and I will not know how to get home! Thankfully everything always turns out fine! (: I hope everyone’s service work is still going well!
I like that the Veteran’s home is getting special guests to come in and mix things up a little bit for the residents. The band sounds very cool, I like that they got the residents involved too. It is very nice to be able to relax a little bit after a long day at school – especially if it as the same time that you are helping others out!
ReplyDeleteSorry you had to miss out on volunteering but it is great that you are enjoying it! Those crazy weeks are hard but they make me enjoy the slower ones so much more! Hopefully you have time to get all of your hours in before the end of them term, I know it’s a bit of work getting it all scheduled. I understand the stress of not having your car. I was so used to being able to just jump in my car and go. I really miss that convince.
heh heh, maybe I'll have to come on the evening some Monday instead of in the afternoon like I usually do. It sounds entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean though about missing a week and it feeling like forever. I'm usually down in Crafts and Hobbies which is a pretty small but dedicated group on Monday afternoons. One week was a holiday and so they had bingo instead of normal programming and if felt like it had been forever by the next Monday and time I could see the Crafts and Hobbies folks again.
I live off campus and thus have to drive in every day, which can be a real hassle, but honestly, having the car is incredibly useful other times. I feel for you and hope that everything continues to go well.
On a random side note, I hate how we have to make crap up to fill out the word count sometimes… :P
That sounds like fun…just sitting and listening to music. Call me lazy, but I would welcome that any day than study nine chapters for my bio exam. In fact, I would welcome that opportunity to just sleep to music the whole time. I think music is such a universal language that anybody can enjoy together. It’s nice to see something generations apart have in common. I guess you can say that music is what bridges our worlds. Ok that sounded really cliché.
ReplyDeleteYes, volunteering really cuts into our school time. Volunteering is nice and all, but especially with our first year in college, we need to get our freshman years down and settled. Piling all these activities alongside volunteering can be quite a hassle. Time management does not seem to be happening yet, it seems. I agree, a car would be so so so helpful! It’s going to be interesting how we will live out this first year of college with everything that’s been going on, and with transportation consisting of walking, biking or buses.
After fall break a lot of my friends got to bring their cars on to campus and last week one of them actually gave me a ride to the Veterans’ Home. It was so helpful!! When I have to rely on the bus to get me there I have to leave like an hour before my actual volunteer time and I feel like it is a waste of my time. It was nice to have an extra hour to study and do productive things instead of sit on a stinky bus!
ReplyDeleteVerna, I agree with what you said about music. I grew up playing the violin and I loved it. I think it is awesome that it is the same all around the world. A note is a note and there is no other translation for it. I could go to a country and know nothing about their language but still be able to play music for them that they would be able to appreciate. It is just a really neat concept
