Last Monday at the Veterans Home was a change from what we normally do. Since it was Halloween, the residents were watching Hocus Pocus. The person working there was surprised that we were even there because apparently it is rare for residents to show up for the movie. The movie showing was at 6:30 and most of the residents are too tired to watch a movie that late or they saw it at the earlier showing. It is frustrating sometimes going to the Veterans Home simply because the employees do not communicate with one another. Last week was a prime example because the employee I was working with was under the impression that I should not be there but no one told us not to come. I need the hours though so I am glad I was able to go. However, Hocus Pocus is not my favorite movie to watch.
Tomorrow at the Veterans Home (if I remember correctly) should be the ice cream social. I have only worked the ice cream social once and that was my very first time volunteering. Because it was my first time, I would not say it went well at all. The girl that I volunteer with and I are not looking forward to it. It is stressful because you have to take orders from the residents and I always feel bad when I cannot understand what they are asking. Also, it is very sticky and gross. Last time they workers offered us ice cream at the end of the ice cream social but by then it was all melted and after serving it to a bunch of people it did not seem appetizing at all. Hopefully since I have had more experience now at the Veterans Home and know what I’m doing tomorrow will go better! I will let you all know how it goes! (:
First off, I am jealous that you even get the opportunity to go there to get hours. I have been communicating with Carolyn for so long now and she still has not even placed me in a set time slot to come work every week. It is very frustrating because my grade is lying on the line here. I email her constantly and try to get in hours but it seems like she is always gone. When she is gone it is especially bad for me because I am not in a time slot, so therefore, I do not even get the opportunity to come in and work to get hours. I honestly do not like this at all and I wish I did not have to get service hours. I have gotten more hours with philanthropies and other stuff with my fraternity then I have at the Veteran's Home. I really hope she even signs off on these hours seeing as how I most likely will not get all thirty hours there at the Home.
ReplyDeleteWow, so 6:30 is too early. I'm definitely not looking forward to getting that old, but yeah sounds like the place has some serious communication problems.May be you can make a suggestion so they change that routine.
ReplyDeleteI read about your first ice-cream social, and you sounded pretty frustrated talking about it. You shouldn't feel bad for not hearing what they say. I mean put yourself in their shoes, you wouldn't want people to feel bad for not hearing you, you'd feel bad for that yourself. just don't take it too seriously, and I'm sure as long as you maintain positive attitude, it would be be much less stressful. You can even think of it as funny instead of feeling bad about it . There's nothing wrong with it, and as long as you're laughing with them and not at them, everyone's happy
Jason, that really stinks that you haven’t been able to get in contact with Carolyn easily. Like I said, the communication at the Veterans’ Home is horrible. Thankfully when I went for my training I met a girl who is a senior and has a car so Carolyn planned our schedules together so I could have a ride home late at night. Since this Monday is going to be the ice cream social you might be able to ask Carolyn if you can come in and help. The ice cream social is usually the busiest event we have so extra help is always appreciated. We are supposed to be there at six for set up and then we leave at about eight so if you are interested I would definitely try and come. It is really stressful to try and get all thirty hours in. I do not know how I am going to do it myself to be honest. I might do some volunteering over break when I have my car. Well I hope everything works out for you, good luck!
