Unfortunately, because I needed to schedule for classes, I was unable to go to the Veterans Home last week. I was a little bummed because it was the horse racing which is a simple game but fun because the residents really get into it. Tomorrow, if I remember correctly, should be the live entertainment. This, by far, is the easiest event to work because we just sit and listen to the music. However, it is my least favorite because the lady usually sings the same songs and she tries to get us to sing with her, which makes us feel a little uncomfortable. Even though we only have a few more weeks in the semesters I still plan on continuing to volunteer at the Veterans Home.
I feel like the Thanksgiving season really makes you think about service work a lot. I was so happy and thankful that I got to go home and spend time with my family. I wish I would have been able to go out and volunteer somewhere when I was there however I simply did not have time. However it was really nice to be at home helping my mom around the house. After dinner I helped my mom do the dishes and she said how nice it was to have help and I thought that was really weird. I guess I used to take what she did for me for granted and now after this class I look at things a totally different way. This class has forced me to go out of my comfort zone and find a service partner and help other people during the crazy shuffle of going from home life to college life. Although it was really stressful and I wasn’t excited about it at the beginning I’m really glad I stuck with it.
Yeah I feel you I stayed here for Thanksgiving it was a dead town, but it's good to be around family .I've been travelling for a while now, it feels good to be independent but it's also lonely specially during the holidays, but hopefully I'll get to go home next break.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to find some extra service hours to make sure that I get all of the 30 done, and my friend suggested this church in town so i might check it out.
That lady sounds interesting by the way. I bet she likes force you to sing along. you got to love old ladies. I'd feel uncomfortable as well if she asked me to sing. Singing is not my thing.
I always feel really bad for the people who cannot go home over the breaks and holidays. I know what you mean when you say it was a ghost town here because I stayed for fall break. I hope you get to go home soon; it’s always really nice to see your family. It is nice however, like you said, to be independent at college. It is a good idea to go to a church to get some extra hours. I might go do that.
ReplyDeleteThe singing lady is definitely very interesting. The residents treat her like she is a huge celebrity and they love her. Before each song she says a few words that somehow relates to what she is going to sing next. That is the most annoying part for me because she is always overly dramatic about it. I couldn’t help but laugh at one of them. She talked about how for a couple of years she moved away from Lafayette to a small town and how she really missed the “hustle and bustle” at Christmas time. I thought this was funny because I don’t really think of Lafayette as a big busy city but apparently to some, it is.
